ABOUT HERAKLION

Heraklion, the capital of Crete and the 5th largest city in Greece, combines the rapid paces of modern reality with the historic and traditional touches of value in the most harmonic manner.

63 kilometres southwest of the city of Heraklion, the ruins of the palace of Festos are considered to be the second largest royal centre of the Minoan era and a famous treasure of civilization.

One of the museums of great importance in the country, its exhibits come mainly from central and eastern Crete and cover 5.500 years of history.

FORTRESS OF KOULE

The trademark of the city, built during 1523-1540, adds a shade of a passed time to Heraklion, and is a reminder of the glory of Venetian Candia. It has become a favourite place for the tourists to visit and for the locals the chosen place to take a walk.

N. KAZANTZAKIS' GRAVE

South of the Venetian walls, where views of the whole city are present, lies the modest grave of one of the most celebrated and world-known writers. It bears a wooden cross and the famous phrase “I hope nothing. I fear nothing. I am free.” is engraved on it, causing emotion and admiration towards this eternal personality.

CRETAQUARIUM

Housed in the former American base of Gournes, 15 kilometres east of Heraklion, the magical world of the sea bottom unfolds in front of your eyes. Enjoy a taste of the sea wealth of the Mediterranean Sea, as well as the unique theme exhibitions.
